Abstract landscape photograph, relief mounted on vellum bristol board, displayed in white shadowbox frame.
Technically speaking these are photographs from my Moving Landscapes series are of place, but technique eliminates the distraction of recognition and the inclination to say “Oh, I know where that is” and focus less on the “context” and how the image is received.
Further detaching the specific image from the place of its origin, its context, are the names of the works. Each taken from “An Sanasán Uisce | The Water Glossary” and incredible work of language and art and scholarship by Carol Anne Connolly.
Each image is a study or meditation on a particular location, but the specific location is not the focus. Over time our memories of place become less sharp and scale and setting warp but we may retain a sense of the place. This work is an attempt to visually collect the more ephemeral elements of place that remain and present them in a way that encourages the viewer to attach their own memories.
