(Regeneration) I made this piece for the Jason McCoy Gallery Drawing Challenge XXII in June 2021, in response to the quote from Joan Didion’s Blue Nights:
“Time passes. Memory fades, memory adjusts, memory conforms to what we think we remember."
The wooden strip on the bottom edge is an extended line to drawn attention to the adjacent “negative” wall space. The painted shapes within the piece are stepped (different thicknesses) creating a more pronounced division. The incised surface pattern, made more visible with oil pastel, unites the individual shapes with the totality of the planes reflecting an interaction of different colors and transparency.
