Color pigment print on 100% cotton-fiber, archival paper.
When a several hundred-year tree has lived its life and has to be destroyed, it is devastating. At the same time, the huge tree stump tells stories of its age, years of blight, disease, or stress. What remained for me as a photographer was not only the historical and physical record but also the amazing beauty of it all. The varying shades of brown and orange, the thin black lines - like fine ink drawings, and the striations from the actual cutting, create bizarre patterns that piqued my curiosity about the tree's story that goes back to days long gone. The tree lived a long life shading an ancient cemetery, and I was privileged to see and photograph the trunk before weather destroyed it further.
